Freight and heavy vehicles

Above 3.5 tonnes of technically permissible mass, Bulgaria charges by distance, not by a car vignette. The rate depends on the vehicle, the axles, the emission class, and the class of road. This page explains the shape of that system. It does not open an account.
The 3.5 tonne line
The line is the technically permissible maximum mass, not the weight of today’s load. An empty lorry that is permitted above 3.5 tonnes stays in the distance system. A car that stays at or under 3.5 tonnes, including many vans, is in the vignette system instead. The charges guide puts the two side by side.
A trailer changes the car’s case when the combination exceeds 3.5 tonnes: the government page then calls for an additional vignette for the trailer, not a switch into the truck toll. A heavy goods combination is different again. If you are unsure which side a particular coupling falls on, the documents in the cab matter more than this paragraph.
What the distance charge uses
The government information page on national traffic rules (opens in a new tab, outside bgtol) describes the toll as depending on permissible mass, ecological class, number of axles, and whether the road is a motorway or a first-class road. Declaring a better emission class, or fewer axles, than the vehicle has is described there as an offence. The kilometre rate itself should be read from the operator, because tariffs move. bgtol does not quote a live rate.
That page, last marked updated on 21 June 2021, described a paid network of 6,050 km of which 3,115 km were charged: about 803 km of motorway and 2,312 km of first-class road, with second-class roads not charged at that time. Treat the lengths as a historical sketch of the design, not as a live map. The toll operator’s website (opens in a new tab, outside bgtol) is where a current map belongs.
Two ways to declare the kilometres
On-board unit
A contract with a national service provider puts a unit in the vehicle. The unit records the tolled segments. A GPS tracker the fleet already uses can sometimes serve, if that provider has the relationship the rules require. The unit has to be on and sending data. A silent box is treated as no declaration.
Route pass
A route pass is a prepaid path: a start, an end, and up to four intermediate points. The government page describes it as valid for 24 hours from activation. Registered users were described as able to buy it up to seven days ahead; unregistered users, for the day of purchase or until the end of the next day. It is a product of the operator, not of this website.
If a vehicle is on the tolled network without a pass for that section and without a working declaration, the system treats it as an offence. The government page describes a compensatory fee that can be paid to avoid a larger penalty, with amounts that differ by weight and axles, and a short window to pay. Those amounts are exactly the sort of figure that changes. Read the current schedule from the authority. This publication will not invent a newer one.

Driving time
Many goods and passenger operations fall under EU rules on driving time and rest, recorded on a tachograph. The familiar pattern is a break of at least 45 minutes after 4 hours 30 minutes of driving, a daily driving limit of 9 hours that may be 10 hours twice in a week, and weekly limits around that. Exceptions exist. The card, the company, and Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 outrank a magazine summary. Private car drivers are not in this regime. The car page is theirs.
Where the road narrows
Weekend and seasonal movement limits for heavy vehicles are signed and ordered by the authorities. They are not stable enough to print here as a timetable. Mountain descents, including the roads that fill the Hemus gap and the Kresna section of the Struma corridor, punish hot brakes. Use a low gear early. Do not park on a ramp or a hard shoulder except in a real stop. Snow rules from 15 November are on the winter page.
